Effects of Prior Conditions on Self -Injurious Behavior in Subsequent Analyses

This study presented a methodology to refine and expand functional analysis procedures. Specifically, the focus of the study was to systematically examine the impact of prior exposure to various conditions on subsequent responding within analogue analyses. Functional analysis analogue conditions were divided into two segments (reinforcer-absent and reinforcer-present). The occurrence of challenging behavior in each segment was recorded. Two studies were conducted: Study 1 involved a functional analysis with 2 adults who exhibited SIB. In Study 2, the participants were exposed to high and low probability conditions prior to a second functional analysis. Results indicated that prior conditions affected subsequent behavior differentially. SIB occurred in both segments of the functional analysis analogue conditions, additionally, rates of SIB within the analogue analysis was affected by events occurring prior to the assessment condition.
