School Effects on Student Resiliency at York High School: A Case Study

A case study on the school effects which fostered resiliency among a specified group of students at York High School is presented. The purpose of the study was to examine the integration of personal factors with school factors in a qualitative study of one group of students who failed one semester of English in their freshman year and participated in no activities during high school, yet managed to graduate within four years of starting at York. These students exhibited personal resiliency after a difficult beginning in high school, and the case study allowed an examination of school factors which helped the students persist in their schooling. An in-depth case study, using interviews, document analysis, and participant observation revealed that the resilient students possess personal traits which intersected with school factors to foster their commitment to and subsequent success in high school. Students interpreted their school experiences through a combination of factors including the people, events, and experiences which worked in coordination with their personal resiliency to help them succeed in school. School factors which support resiliency are explored, especially as they pertain to individual staff members identified by the student subjects.
