Instrumentation in the Works of Witold Lutoslawski

The music of Witold Lutoslawski displays instrumentational traits which may be used, in conjunction with melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic tendencies, to define his compositional style. The use of instrumental color is examined in all major works up to and including Chain 3 (1986), with an emphasis on the identification of instrumentational idiosyncrasies and the relationship of timbre, texture, and structural concerns. A biographical synopsis is included as well as a brief discussion of the background of the use of chance procedures and the implication of this usage on a study of instrumentation. Illustrations include tables delineating the instrumentation of major works and forty excerpts from published scores. An extensive chronology documents Lutoslawski's life, awards, works, and performances through early 1987, with source identification for individual items referenced to a numbered bibliography.
