"Ps.-Seneca ""de Spe"" (Anth. Lat. 415 Riese): Prolegomena, Text, Translation, Commentary"

A critical text of the poem, with full apparatus and English translation, is presented. The manuscript tradition of the Anthologia Latina and the Leidensis Vossianus Latinus Quarto 86 (which contains De Spe) are described. The historical process by which the Senecan epigrams came to be attributed to Seneca is traced from Scaliger's editio princeps to the present. Attitudes toward Hope in Roman religion and popular belief are discussed, and De Spe's literary genre (the locus de Fortuna) and models are examined. The Commentary elucidates textual, grammatical, hermeneutic, and metrical problems, and Realien are investigated. In the Preface, reasons are adduced for believing that De Spe cannot be the work of Seneca.
