The study examined the effects of different applications of modern industrial technology on the strength of environmental values, and tested the occupation-centered alienation from technology hypothesis. The sample consisted of 300 workers employed with small machine-tool companies in western Pennsylvania. The data were collected using a survey questionnaire that was distributed to workers from 38 different companies presumed to represent the range of technology that are used in the industry. The results showed that workers who were more exposed to CNC versus manually controlled machines had stronger environmental values, however alienation was not a mediating factor, and the alienation from technology hypothesis was rejected.
