Acoustic Labor in the Timing of Everyday Life: A Critical Contribution to the History of Samba in Rio De Janeiro

"This thesis attempts to propose guideposts for a critical history of samba in the context of Rio de Janeiro, as a relational universe centered on the production of songs, the playing of instruments and dancing. Highlighting the escolas de samba (lit., samba schools) as mediatory instances of the often conflicting investments that define the so-called samba world, the author traverses the latter through a dialogue with its producers and reference to recorded illustrations of song-making and other aspects of samba practice brought up in the text. In conclusion, he argues for the reconceptualization of his object of study in terms of (acoustic) human labor, stressing its potentials for transcending crucial theoretical dilemmas pervading the study of practices otherwise deemed as ""musics."""
