"The Geography of the ""social Register"""

Abstract

dc:description

The Social Register is a reliable indicator of upper class status in the United States. This paper explores the intersection of class, status and residency in America. The upper class has used strategic legal constructions such as restrictive land covenants, zoning, municipal incorporation and defensive annexation to create a stratified place hierarchy with profound consequences for all of society. The Social Register of 1988 is geographically analyzed to identify where the upper class lives in the United States. The geographical analysis includes all 32,516 households by county and for every community with over 10 households (first homes plus second homes). Includes 27 national, regional and metropolitan maps for easy identification of Social Register concentrations. Lake Forest, Illinois is profiled as a typical upper class suburb. Second and third homes of the Social Register are also mapped and geographically analyzed. A typology of upper class place including urban, suburban, exurban, equestrian and permanent vacation places is discussed.
