Satellite Tobacco Necrosis Virus RNA (STNV RNA) is an efficient, eukaryotic mRNA lacking a 5$\sp\prime$-terminal cap group or 5$\sp\prime$-terminal covalently-linked protein. Addition of a 5$\sp\prime$-terminal cap group does not enhance the translation of STNV RNA. This suggests that STNV RNA contains some feature(s) which compensates for its lack of a 5$\sp\prime$-terminal cap group. Interestingly, the 5$\sp\prime$-untranslated region of STNV RNA contains a nucleotide sequence that is complementary to the 3$\sp\prime$-terminal region of the 18S rRNA.
