Simulation and Estimation Techniques for Wideband High-Frequency Communication Channels
Abstract
dc:descriptionA technique for estimating the channel multipath parameters for wideband high frequency (WBHF) communication systems is analyzed. To explore the technique, a WBHF communication system is simulated in software using three new channel models. One channel model is based on a simulation of wave propagation in the ionosphere, while another model is based on measured ionospheric transfer functions. A third model is a theoretical model of a frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channel based on a model for the channel power spectral density function. The theory and implementation of the three channel models are presented. Each channel model is validated by analyzing the bit-error-rate performance of WBHF communication systems operating over the channels. The strengths and limitations of each model are also discussed. Finally, a channel estimation scheme, based on an autoregressive (AR) model for the channel multipath parameters, is developed. The implementation and performance of the channel estimation scheme are analyzed through simulations using the WBHF channel models.
