Effect of Temperature, Moisture, and Soil Texture on Dimethyl 2,3,5,6 Tetrachloroterephthalic Acid Degradation (Crabgrass)

Abstract

dc:description

The effect of soil temperature (ST), soil moisture (SM) and soil texture (STX) on DCPA (Dimethyl 2,3,5,6 tetrachloroterephthalic Acid) degradation was measured in the laboratory. Treatments consisted of six soil temperatures with a combination of three soil moisture levels. Soil temperature influenced the rate of DCPA degradation in the following order: 10 35(DEGREES)C. The average half-life (HL) was computed for each ST and ranged from 92 days at 10(DEGREES)C to 18 days at 30(DEGREES)C. Soil moisture content influenced the rate of degradation in the following order: Low (10%) < Medium (20%) = High (40%). The average HL of DCPA computed for each SM level were 49 days, 33 days and 31 days for the low, medium and high SM levels, respectively. Faster degradation of DCPA was observed from the medium STX, a sand:soil mixture (47.5 : 52.5 by weight) than from either sand (coarse STX) or soil (fine STX, Flanagan silt loam). The effective level of DCPA required for the control of large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis L. Scop.) germination was measured in the field. An application rate of 4.5 Kg a.i. ha('-1) (38% of the labeled rate) provided a similar degree of control to that of the full rate.
