Stress Changes in Railroad Car Wheels Due to Axially Symmetric Thermal Loads

A series of induction heating tests is conducted on class U 33-inch railroad car wheels to determine the behavior of initially stress free wheels subjected to axially symmetric thermal loadings. Residual stress levels after final cooling of the wheels is determined by a sectioning technique. Results from the tests are compared to predictions from two elastic-plastic axisymmetric finite element computer programs which incorporate temperature dependent material properties.
