Federal-Sector Labor Relations and the Political Activities of Three Federal-Employee Unions

The importance of political action to public-employee unions has long been recognized by industrial-relations researchers. However, few researchers have attempted to examine public-employee union political action. The gap in the literature has been particularly significant at the Federal level. The purpose of this study has been to examine the political activity of three Federal-employee unions over the past ten years. Using a qualitative methodology, this study has examined Federal union political action as an independent and a dependent variable. It has been shown that these three unions engage in a variety of political activities to different degrees. It has also been shown that their political influence has not been great on selected legislative issues. Future research should be directed toward the more systematic and rigorous analysis of these unions political influence and the factors that cause their overall political action level to vary.
