The Effect of Smectite Layer Thickness and Fabric Upon Salt Filtration at Room Temperature

A solution 0.79 Molal in NaCl and 0.079 Molal in CaCl(,2) was forced through clay cakes made by sedimenting the one-half to two micron size fraction of Cheto clay. The two cakes sedimented from distilled water had nearly parallel-flake fabric whereas the two sedimented from the described brine approached random fabric. Clay cake thicknesses ranged from 0.5 to 2 centimeters, confining pressure was 5000 pounds per square inch, mean brine pressure was 2300 pounds per square inch, and the differential fluid pressure across the clay cake was 1000 pounds per square inch for random fabrics, 2000 pounds per square inch for parallel-flake fabrics. Steady state was achieved in 4 to 5 months.
