"A Linguistic Analysis Of The Manuscript Tradition Of The ""milagros De Nuestra Senora"" (gonzalo De Berceo, La Rioja, Spain)"

The intent of this study is to investigate the linguistic similarities and differences in the manuscript tradition of the Milagros de Nuestra Senora by Gonzalo de Berceo, the first Spanish poet whose name is known. While there is very little information available concerning the life of Berceo, it is known that he was born at the end of the twelfth century in the modern-day Spanish province of Logrono. Berceo wrote in the Riojano dialect and the majority of his works have sur- vived. The Milagros de Nuestra Senora is known to have existed in four different manuscripts. Two manuscripts are from the Middle Ages and the others are from the eighteenth century. In Chapter One information is presented with respect to the life of Berceo and the manuscript tradition of the Milagros. In Chapters Two and Three the previous studies of the language of medieval La Rioja and the manuscript tradition and language of Berceo are summarized. Chapter Four contains the analysis of the linguistic similarities and differences found in the manuscript tradition of the Milagros. The investigation focuses on the orthographic, phonological, morpho- logical, lexical, and syntactic features present in the various manuscripts. In addition, the language of the recently discovered Mecolaeta manuscript is studied in detail for the first time. The Appendix contains the text of the Milagros as it occurs in each of the three manuscripts.
