Computer Analysis and Synthesis of a Sung Vowel

This paper presents generalized information on digital analysis and synthesis of sung vowels while examining in detail the analysis and synthesis of the sung vowel "a" as in father. A random vocal sample is compared to published data in an attempt to indicate areas needing further clarification. A detailed analysis of amplitude envelope, frequency deviation, and spectral data is followed by an examination of alternatives in synthesis modeling. From these alternatives, nonlinear/filter synthesis is chosen for implementation. The methods used and problems encountered are presented in detail.
