"MENDELSSOHN'S ""die ERSTE WALPURGISNACHT"""

Abstract

dc:description

Felix Mendelssohn's Opus 60, Die erste Walpurgisnacht, is a cantata approximately forty minutes' long for soloists, mixed chorus, and orchestra, with a ballad text by Goethe. Although not well known or often performed today, it warrants this full study of its intrinsic merit, former popularity, and central place in the development of nineteenth-century cantata repertory.
