Abstract
dc:descriptionPaul Patterson, a contemporary British composer, composes in a style which contains both determinate and indeterminate elements. This dissertation discusses influences on his composition, his English heritage and the styles of such composers at Ligeti, Penderechi, Bernstein and Stravinsky. The author discusses the Kyrie, Gloria, Requiem, Spare Parts, Time Piece, Canterbury Psalms and Voices of Sleep through an analysis of motive, harmony, orchestration and determinate and indeterminate elements among others. The dissertation also contains a short biography on Mr. Patterson and information on Mr. Tim Rose Price, a collaborator for his vocal compositions.
