Soil-Geomorphology and Soil-Stratigraphy in the Lower Pomme De Terre River Valley, Southwestern Missouri

dc:descriptionDuring the years 1962 to 1977, studies of surficial geology and soil geomorphology in the Breshears Bottoms along the lower Pomme de Terre River, Southwestern Missouri, produced models of erosion, deposition and soil-stratigraphy. These studies chronicle events that began prior to 50,000 radiocarbon years before the present. A composite model of terrace formation and soil-stratigraphic relationships is constructed showing 4 distinct terraces or terrace complexes, T0, T1, T2, and T3. Soils found on these terraces show a chrono-sequence with entisols dominating T0, inceptisols and alfisols with weak argillic horizons dominating T1, mollisols and alfisols with strong argillic horizons dominating T2, and a surface paleosol and alfisols dominating T3. Buried paleosols were identified in the sediments of T1 and T2.
