Chemotactic Methylation in Bacillus Subtilis (Chemosensory, Adaptation)
Abstract
dc:descriptionChemotaxis is the process by which bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, and Bacillus subtilis accumulate at higher concentrations of attractants and away from high concentrations of repellents. Methylation and demethylation of methyl-accepting chemotaxis proteins (MCPs) has been demonstrated to play a central role in this process. The goal of this work was to clarify the nature of the response of the Bacillus subtilis methylation-demethylation system to attractant or repellent stimulation, both in vivo and in vitro. The functional homology of methylation and demethylation in Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli was also examined.
