Picosecond Time-Resolved Studies of IVR: Theory and Applications of Time-Resolved Fluorescence Depletion

Time resolved fluorescence depletion (TRFD), a new technique for the study of intramolecular vibrational redistribution, is described. Picosecond time resolution is obtained through the application of picosecond laser pump-probe techniques. A time dependent perturbation theory based description of the interaction of the laser pulses with an ensemble of molecules is presented to show the linear dependence of the signal on the dynamics of the molecular system. Data obtained from the application of this technique to fluorene, butylanine, and 2-amino pyridine in molecular beams are presented as is a description of the apparatus which was used for the experiments.
