During the past several decades, the luminol chemiluminescence (CL) reaction has been successfully applied to the sensitive determination of a variety of analytes. The research reported here made use of electrochemical methods both to catalyze the luminol CL reaction and to generate reagents for the CL reaction in situ. Although few analytical applications of luminol electrocatalyzed chemiluminescence (ECL) have been previously reported, the use of an electrode offers several potential advantages over the conventional metal ion or metal complex catalysts; these include control of both the spatial and temporal point at which catalysis takes place, and elimination of the need to prepare and add catalyst solutions. The emphasis of this research was on developing electrocatalysis of the luminol CL reaction and electrogeneration of reagents as viable methods for analysis.
