The Effect of Shear Flow on Solidification Microstructures
Abstract
dc:descriptionCalculations are performed to determine the effect of fluid flow near a solidifying interface on the temperature and concentration fields existing during solidification, and the changes wrought on the microstructure by those fields. The solidification interface position and speed are controlled by two boundary conditions, corresponding to local thermodynamic equilibrium and conservation of mass. A three dimensional model of the solidifying interface is constructed, and the velocity, temperature and concentration fields are calculated for a wide range of alloy compositions and process conditions.
