A Dynamic Stress Investigation of Intersecting Cylinders by the Finite Element Method

Using a versatile and effective three-dimensional finite element method, the stress concentration present around the intersection of unreinforced two normally intersecting cylinders and two 45 deg. lateral connections is evaluated. Complicated structural behavior in the vicinity of the region with its sharp variation of geometric discontinuity is investigated under the several different types of loading such as inplane moment, out-of-plane moment and torsion as well as an internal pressure loading. The stress indices are deduced and then compared with the present ASME code implementation regarding intersecting cylinders.
