Reliability Analysis of Braced Excavations
Abstract
dc:descriptionA method has been developed for evaluating the probability of failure of braced excavations through three critical modes of failure, namely buckling of struts, heaving of the base, and excessive settlement of the adjoining ground. The method was applied to braced excavations in medium to soft clays (mainly in Japan), and a range of reliability in current practice was examined. The strut-buckling mode of current design appears to have reliability comparable to permanent structures, whereas two orders of magnitude lower reliability had been observed for the heaving mode.
