High Pressure Optical Studies of the Thallous Halides and of Charge-Transfer Complexes (Insulator, Metal, Sulfur, Infrared)

dc:descriptionHigh pressure was used to study the insulator-to-metal transition in sulfur and the thallous halides and to study the intermolecular interactions in charge-transfer complexes. The approach to the band overlap insulator-to-metal transition was studied in three thallous halides and sulfur by optical absorption measurements of the band gap as a function of pressure. The band gap of sulfur continuously decreases with pressure up to the insulator-to-metal transition which occurs between 450 and 485 kbars. The results on the thallous halides indicate that the indirect gap decreases more rapidly than the direct gap; the closing of the indirect gap is responsible for the observed insulator-to-metal transitions.
