Exploratory Study of Chief Information Officers in Fortune Service and Industrial Organizations

A survey was conducted of chief information officers (CIO's) in the 100 top-ranked Fortune Service organizations and in the 100 top-ranked Fortune Industrial organizations. A questionnaire was used to collect data on the following topics: the information activities managed, information-related concerns, titles, reporting relationships, reporting responsibilities, proximity to the chief executive officer (CEO), career progression, education, salaries, budget responsibilities, achievements, role in strategy formulation, professional organizations, demographics and the role of Information Resources Management in the organization.
