Measurements of Surface Displacements During Stress Wave Propagation in Opaque Solids Using Pulsed Laser Speckle Photography

An experimental method to measure in-plane surface displacements in opaque solids has been developed. The system consists of combining a pulsed ruby laser source and an optical speckle photography recording scheme. The set-up is capable of measuring surface displacements due to stress waves and propagating cracks in solids. A double exposure recording allows the comparison of object points to be made between two states of displacement. The final specklegram is processed and treated as a diffraction grating to yield both full-field or point-by-point data concerning object displacements. The advantages of such a system include variable sensitivity recordings, non-contacting, ultra fast and it fills the gap between other experimental methods such as moire and holography. Results using Homalite 100 and Lexan are presented.
