Rural Surgeons' Conformity to the Specialty Code

This research describes the manner in which surgeons in nonmetropolitan practice deviate from the specialty code, and seeks to understand this deviation in light of ecological theory. The hypothesis is that the low density of specialists and associated lack of structural constraints on competitors, suppliers, financers, and consumers of surgical services leads surgeons in nonmetropolitan practice, more than their metropolitan counterparts, to deviate from the specialty code.
