Light Scattering Measurement of Phospholipid Microvesicle Membrane Fusion Kinetics

The moments of the time constant density function, as measured by quasi-elastic light scattering and Koppel's method of cumulants, are expressed in terms of moments of the size density function of single-walled hollow spherical scatterers. An equation governing the evolution of fusing particles is derived and solved for simple cases. A numerical treatment is discussed and applied to a phospholipid vesicle system which appears to evolve primarily by membrane fusion. Detailed kinetic characterization of the evolution by means of light scattering measurements appears to be practical.
