Crosslinking and Entanglement Effects in Polybutadiene
Abstract
dc:descriptionProton relaxation measurements have been used to investigate the effects of crosslinking and entanglements on segmental motion in polybutadiene. The temperature dependence of T(,1), the spin-lattice relaxation time, T(,2), the spin-spin relaxation time, and T(,1(,(rho))), the spin-lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame are reported for samples of well characterized crosslink density. These relaxation parameters are reported as a function of both temperature and pressure for uncrosslinked samples of narrow molecular weight distribution. The relaxation data are interpreted in terms of the effects of crosslinks and entanglements on segmental motion. Well characterized, lightly crosslinked networks of the narrow molecular weight distributed samples have been prepared in both the bulk and dilute states. The temperature dependence of T(,1), T(,2), and T(,1(,(rho))) for these networks is reported. The values of the Mooney-Rivilin constants, 2C(,1), and 2C(,2), for these networks have also been measured. The NMR and bulk property measurements are interpreted in terms of the effects of the sol fraction and entanglements on chain motion.
