Photogrammetric Systems for the Analysis of Planar Displacements in Soil

Abstract

dc:description

Engineering testing of soils and soil models often involves the measurement of planar displacements in cross-sectional areas. Photogrammetric techniques provide high-density, global information. This thesis is intended to assist prospective users in the design of photogrammetric systems for this purpose. A mathematical model which accounts for camera orientation and its changes was developed. Included in the model are corrections for refraction by the glass plate through which the soil was photographed and deviations of that glass plate from a plane. A computerized simulator was developed and used to quantify the effects of errors in system parameters. A comparison between the achievable accuracies of metric and non-metric cameras was made. Optimal control requirements for each are stated.
