An additive stage model of component processes in impression formation is proposed and three stages--stimulus encoding, stimulus integration and response selection--are examined. One hundred twenty eight subjects rated the likeableness of hypothetical stimulus persons described by adjective sets that varied in set size, favorableness and consistency (among descriptors). Three between-subjects factors--intrastimulus order within the adjective set (serial position), instructional set regarding the relative importance of individual adjective descriptors and the number of available response scale categories--were hypothesized to selectively affect, respectively, encoding, integration and response selection, as inferred from additive model analysis of response time data. While each factor did affect the stage it was hypothesized to influence, an additional effect of response scale upon integration was noted. Results are interpreted in terms of an additive factors logic (following Sternberg) and were generally supportive of the proposed model.
