A test of parity conservation in proton-proton scattering at 15 MeV

Abstract

dc:description

An experiment has been performed at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory tandem Van de Graaff to test the conservation of parity in proton-proton scattering. A parity violating effect was sought bv measuring the correlation bet\<1een the total p-p cross section and the he1icity of the incident beam. The experiment used integral counting techniques to achieve the high data rate required. The Van de Graaff Lamh-shift polarized ion source was modified to permit reversing the direction of polarization at a 1 kHz rate. The experiment used analog signal processing; the corre1at1.on between the cross section and the beam he1icity was measured using a phase-locked amplifier. The means for rapidly reversing the beam polarization and the methods for reduction of systematic errors are discussed. The measured longitudinal asymmetry AL=(δ+-δ_)/(δ++δ_) for p-p scattering at 15 MeV is (-1.8 ± 2.0) X 10-7 and the 95% confidence 6x 10-7 including the effects of systematic errors.
