Rare earth impurities in metals: The transition from virtual to bound f levels
Abstract
dc:descriptionMeasurements of the solvent Knight shift and bulk magnetic susceptibility have been carried out in dilute alloys of the rare earth metals in liquid Cu. Other measurements of the Al and Cu Knight shift in dilute alloys of Gd in Al-Cu and Al-Ag binary alloys have also been made. The susceptibility measurements of the rare earths in liquid Cu indicate localized magnetic moments on the rare earth impurities except La and Lu. These have the same magnitudes as the moments observed for free rare earth atoms and are attributed to the spinorbit coupling of the rare earth 4f electrons. The solvent Knight shift measurements in liquid Gu show little variation throughout the rare earth series which indicates that valance scattering is the dominant effect. In contrast to the results found in pure Al, any influence of the 4f cores on the scattering process is quite small. The Al and Cu Knight shift changes in Al-Cu-Gd and Al-Ag-Gd alloys show a most interesting behavior as the binary composition is varled from pure Al to pure Cu or Ag. At a temperature of 1100 C, r = 1/K dK/dc is found to remain relatively constant at a value of ~ 12 from pure Al to ~ 60 at.% CU or Ag. At this point, r drops sharply to a value near 0 for both the Al and Cu resonance and remains relatively constant at this level to pure Cu or Ag composition. This has been interpreted as a transition of 4f core electrons from virtual bound levels in pure Al to bound states below the conduction band bottom in pure Cu and Ag.
