Cross sections for pi+, pi-, K+, and K- mesons on complex nuclei

A measurement of the absorption and diffraction cross sections of 3.5 Gev/c 7r and K mesons on beryllium, carbon, aluminum, copper and lead was made at the Zero Gradient Synchrotron at Argonne National Lab. A set of circular scintillation counters measured transmission as a function of angle for each element. Cross sections were then calculated from the observed transmissions. Absorption and diffraction cross sections are given for 3.5 GeVlc pi+ pi- K+ and K- on beryllium, carbon and aluminum, for pi+, pi- and K+ for copper, and for pi+ and pi- on lead. The diffraction cross sections are found to be larger than the values predicted by optical model calculations. This is discussed in terms of the relative magnitudes of the real and imaginary parts of the nuclear potential.
