Strange particle production in pi-p and pi+n interactions at 2.5 GeV/c

A bubble chamber experiment based upon 2.71 x 10^5 m pi- track length in hydrogen and 6.88 x 105 m~+ track length in deuterium has been performed to study strange particle production. Cross sections for pi-p reactions exhibit no marked departure from trends established by other experiments at nearby energies. In extracting information about pi+n interactions from the pi+D exposure it was found that 15 to 30% of events, depending on the final state particles, had protons with momentum greater than 250 MeV/c. These protons were not isotropic in the laboratory and therefore not spectators in the sense of the impulse approximation. Protons whose momentum lay in the interval 0 to 250 MeV/c were generally isotropic, and their momentum distribution agreed moderately well with a Hulthen distribution normalized over this interval. With the inclusion of the high proton momentum events the cross sections for processes apparently arising from pi+n interactions were found to be in satisfactory agreement with cross sections for the charge symmetric pi-p reactions.
