Calculations on production reactions using the absorptive peripheral model

Abstract

dc:description

We present calculations for the production and decay angular distributions of resonances produced in high energy collisions. The peripheral model with absorption is used in the calculations; only two body meson induced reactions are treated. A comparison between the partial wave summation method~ which is used here, and the earlier impact parameter formalism is given. The reaction K p -> K*N is treated in detail, as both pseudoscalar and vector meson exchanges appear to be important. The possibility of determining the signs of coupling constants from a study of these reactions is discussed. Reactions in which two resonances are produced are analyzed for correlations between the decay angles of the resonances ~ and absorption model predictions for these correlations are compared with experiment. The problem of measuring the branching ratio for the decay po -> e+e- is discussed, first generally and then using absorption model predictions to estimate the effect of the omega -> e+e- decay mode. The exchange of baryons is treated in an attempt to understand the small backward peaks in differential cross sections for some reactions. Absorption model predictions are found to be unreliable for these reactions. The details of the partial wave summation formalism for the exchange of mesons and baryons in meson induced reactions are given in the Appendices.
