The low temperature magnetic susceptibility of palladium hydride and palladium deuteride

The magnetic susceptibility of palladium hydride for H/Pd< 0.81 and of palladium 4euteride for D/Pd < 0.65 has been measured by the Faraday method at temperatures between 6 and 150 K. The method of measurement has been compared in particular with that employed by Jamieson and Manchester. High sensitivity for small samples was achieved by utilizing the magnetic field of a superconductive solenoid. The samples were produced by hydriding from the gas phase. The high susceptibility of palladium was quenched upon alloying it with hydrogen or deuterium. The local maxitllum in the susceptibility of palladium near 75 K also disappeared. The measurements were interpreted with respect to the two-phase nature of these systems. No isotope effect has been detected in the atomic ratio corresponding to the S-phase boundary (S-min) at these low temperatures. The values of S-min were found to decrease slightly with increasing temperature from 0.638 ± .010 at 5.8 K to 0.624 ± .004 at 149 K. An effect corresponding to the resistive and specific heat anomalies near 55 K was sought, but no evidence of a magnetic susceptibility anomaly was found. Superconductive transition temperatures were also investigated as a function of atomic ratio for electrolytically loaded hydrides and deuterides with atomic ratios greater than 0.8, and a reverse isotope effect was observed. The impact of the susceptibility results on a model which attributed the superconductive reverse isotope effect to an electronic structure difference between Pd-H and Pd-b was discussed.
