Some aspects of non-Abelian gauge theories
Abstract
dc:descriptionIn this thesis we consider two aspects of the theory of non-Abelian gauge fields. In the first part,we calculate the fermion-fermion scattering amplitude for a non-Abelian gauge theory with SU(N) gauge symmetry in the limit of high energy with fixed momentum transfer through sixth order in the coupling constant. We keep only the leading logarithmic terms in each order of perturbation theory. To avoid the infrared problem, the Higgs mechanism is invoked to give masses to the vector bosons of the theory. lye find that the scattering amplitude exponentiates to a Regge form. This result is qualitatively different from an earlier published calculation. In the second part of the thesis, we consider fermion-fermion scattering in a non-Abelian gauge theory with massless vector bosons, and demonstrate that for physically measurable cross sections the infrared divergences,of the theory cancel out to lowest non-trivial order.
