Extremal effects in rotationally inelastic diffraction

The scattering of the hydrogenic molecules H2, D2, and HD from vacuum cleaved MgO (001) along the [110] azimuth has been studied. A thermal beam at 300 K and 80 K was used. Particular emphasis has been placed on the rotational inelastic processes which accompany diffraction of RD. Singularities in the scattering amplitude for the rotationally inelastic events have been found to significantly effect the scattered distributions. This effect, extremal scattering, has been explained in terms of a simple mechanism, allowing accurate calculation of the scattering profiles and angles. The scattering of helium along both the [110] and the [100] azimuths has also been studied. Anomalous shifts and structure have been seen in the diffraction lobes for scattering along the [110] azimuth. These are explained in terms of a wavelength dependent transition probability, calculated in the semiclassical approximation.
