Magnetic properties of dilute solutions of liquid He³ in He⁴ at low temperatures
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe spin-diffusion coefficient and magnetic susceptibility of dilute solutions of He3 in He4 has been measured down to about 3moK. These measurements were made on two solutions of nominal concentrations of 1.3 and 5.0% He3 in He4 under their own vapor pressures. The values of the diffusion coefficient fit T*-2 laws below about 10moK for the 1.3% and below about 30mQK for the 5.0% solutions in agreement with the Landau model of a Fermi liquid. The susceptibility is found to be constant at sufficiently low temperatures also in agreement with the Landau model. Dilute solutions of He3 in He4 are found to behave as weakly interacting Fermi systems with the advantage that the concentration, and therefore the Fermi temperature, can be varied from 0 to about 6% He3• Sirlce the system is weakly interacting, perturbation theory can be applied and the effective interaction potential between He3 particles can be deduced from measurements of the properties of these solutions at different concentrations.
