Strange-particle production in 8 BeV/c proton-proton interactions
Abstract
dc:descriptionAn experiment has been performed in which 37,000 pictures were obtained of the 80 Ii Brookhaven hydrogen bubble chamber exposed to 8 BeV/c protons. All 2, 4, 6, and 8 prong events with one or more associated kinks or V's were scanned for and 7,300 candidates for strange particle events were found. Of these, 3,600 were successfully measured and3 of these, 1,260 strange particle events were identified. A fiducial region was selected and the partial cross section for 33 different final states calculated; This corresponds to a corrected cross sec~ion for identified strange particle events of 950 ± 95 ~b. The total strange particle production cross section is estimated to be 1.8 robe Evidence for N (1236), Yl (138S), Yo (140S), and Yl (1660) formation is presented 0 Data concerning the existence of reported di-baryon resonances in the AN final state is presented, and the conclusion is drawn that no such resonances appear in the A Nand ZN mass distributions of this experiment 0. Finally,.,the .3 body final states are examined in detail. An anomalous peaking is observed in the K+1\.. invariant mass in the K+P J\ final state. The simple one pion exchange model does not seem to predi.ct adequately the distribution observed. The OEEM also predicts a cross section for this final state a factor of 2 larger than the measured value of 54 ± 7 ~b if no cutoff in 4-momentum transfer to the proton is imposed.
