Far infrared absorption in superconducting niobium alloys

The widths of the energy gaps in bulk samples of transition metal binary alloys of the system Zr - Nb - Mo have been measured by the absorption of far-infrared radiation. The gap edges are sharp and there is no notable structure on the curves. No ,attempt was made to compare the shapes of the curves with theory, since certain parameters required for the theoretical calculation were not known. The behavior of the widths of the gaps with alloying follows qualitatively that of the transition temperatures, but the reduced gap widths in two cases are Significantly different from the BCS value of 3.52. The relation between the calculated BCS interaction parameter V and the reduced gap width is found to be opposite to that in the simple metals. Results of this and other experiments can be taken to indicate that the interaction parameter V increases by a factor of about four over this alloy series.
