Abstract
dc:descriptionHigh :purity gold wires of 0.016 inch diameter were heated in ten milliseconds to temperatures between 5000C and 700oC, held there for times less than a few seconds and quenched to room temperature in water. The cooling time was about 40 milliseconds. Similar wires, but(con.taining about 0.1% silver were .. .... . . 0 similarly heated to temperatures very near to 650 C and similarly quenched. It was found that, although the assumption of diffusion limited generation and subsequent annealing near 1000Csufficed for the pure wires, the silver containing wires see~ed to generate much more slowly. It was further found that, for the pure Wires, sources for vacancies other than the wire surface or grain boundaries were necessary. A short discussion of the relationship between high temperature generation and low temperature annealing was carried out. Generation from perfect lattice sites was also discussed.
