Observation of structure in the phi phi system produced in radiative J/psi decays

Abstract

dc:description

A sample of 4.9 million JI'I/J decays from the Mark III detector at SPEAR is used to study the radiative decay J I'I/J ---+ i¢¢. The decay is observed in two final states; iK+K-K+K-and the previously unobserved iK+K-K sKl. The new final state and an improved analysis of the all charged state allow the observation of a large enhancement in the ¢¢ mass spectrum in the region below 2.5 GeV Ie? in addition to the 1'Jc. The product branching ratio B(J/'I/J ---+ i1'Jc) x B(1'Jc ---+ ¢¢) is measured in both final states. The branching ratio to the low mass region, B(J/'I/J ---+ i¢¢ ,m(¢¢) < 2.51 GeV Ie?') is also measured. The angular distribution of the kaons is used to demonstrate that the enhancement is predominantly pseudoscalar. This effect is similar to what is observed in other radiative decays to two vector mesons and a photon. An upper limit is placed on the production of tensor glueball candidates observed to decay to ¢¢ by another experiment.
