Quantization of anomalous gauge theories

Abstract

dc:description

"We discuss the quantization of Anomalous Gauge Theories (AGT) both in the context of functional integration and canonical Hamiltonian approach. The Wess-Zumino term (WZT), which repairs gauge symmetry in AGT is discussed and its derivation is presented in the canonical approach as a consequence of the restoration of the frrst-class nature of the gauge constraints. We applied this technique in a few quantut;n field theories like the chiral Schwinger model, chiral bosons and massive electrodynamics. This construction of the WZT is intended to contrast with the one derived by functional methods with the use of the Faddeev-Popov trick. To shed some light into the physical significance of the WZ field we discuss a simple quantum mechanical model, the ""amputated planar rotor"". In this context the WZ field present itself as a topological charge for the model. Possible generalizations are discussed."
