Caste, collusion and conflict: An ethnographic study of factors affecting the dropout of Mexican-American students in a Chicago barrio elementary school

The alarmingly high rate of secondary school dropout among Mexican-origin students in the United States has been well documented statistically, but little has been written on the school experiences of these students in barrio elementary schools of northern states. This study aims to fill the gap by providing a multidimensional perspective on the achievement and educational experiences of Mexican-origin elementary school students. The goal is to contribute to a deepened understanding of the complex interplay of factors which ultimately lead to these students becoming educational casualties.
