Determinants of parent-child interaction in adolescent mothers

This study examines the relationships between five maternal variables related to the quality of interactions between adolescent mothers and their infants. Maternal variables are: general knowledge of developmental milestones, accuracy of knowledge of one's own child's development, locus of control, self-efficacy, and age. Accuracy of knowledge of one's own child's development was found to be the most significant predictor of the quality of parent-child interaction. While this finding is preliminary and needs to be investigated further, it offers interesting consideration to the development of interventions that promote positive and supportive interactions between adolescent mothers and their infants.
