Economic relations between Brazil and Argentina: The shift in the eighties

This study is a critical view of the effort to improve economic ties between Argentina and Brazil. The detailed historical information used here should help us to better understand the rapprochement between the two countries. Our focus is on the program of economic integration launched in the mid-eighties and the assertion that trade in capital goods would guarantee the attainment of economic integration in the La Plata Basin. Intra-industry trade is still a rather small part of manufacturing trade and still a smaller part of overall trade between Brazil and Argentina, notwithstanding its substantial growth since 1986. Political difficulties linked to economic dislocations explain most features of this agenda for economic integration.
