Attitudes of clinical social workers toward alcoholism

This study focused on the attitudes held by clinical social workers regarding the nature of alcoholism. In addition, model preference and differences in the attitudes regarding female and male alcoholics were investigated. Mailed-questionnaire was sent to 200 subjects who were randomly selected from the mailing list of licensed clinical social workers in the State of Illinois. 9-points Likert scale was used in the construction of the instrument. Results of this study revealed that there was a consensus among clinical social workers regarding the nature of alcoholism. The majority of clinical social workers were identified with the disease model of alcoholism. Subjects held positive attitudes regarding alcoholics. Finally, no statistically significant differences were found between subjects' attitudes regarding female and male alcoholics.
